Medical Cannabis

Medical Cannabis

Medical Cannabis (Medical Marijuana) is now available to qualified patients in the state of Florida. Whole Family Healthcare is pleased to announce that we are now able to qualify appropriate patients for medical cannabis through our Cannabis-certified physician Dr. Jeffrey Mueller. The potential therapeutic benefits of medical cannabis are enormous and far-reaching. Cancer and chronic pain are conditions where medical cannabis seems to have the most potential to improve quality of life. However, there are many other conditions that may qualify you under the Compassionate Use Guidelines as listed below.

The State of Florida has defined the following health conditions and categories as being eligible as “qualifying conditions” as defined by Florida Statutes:

  • Chronic Pain Conditions
  • Cancer
  • Terminal condition within one year
  • Epilepsy
  • Glaucoma
  • Positive HIV status
  • AIDS
  • Crohn’s Disease/Ulcerative Colitis
  • PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Parkinson’s
  • Multiple Sclerosis or other “demyelinating conditions” of the central and peripheral nervous system

Conditions of the same “Kind” or “class” or comparable to the ones listed above.

Chronic Non-malignant Pain:
A patient with chronic, non-malignant pain only qualifies for the use of medical marijuana in Florida under the following circumstances:
The pain must be caused by a qualifying medical condition or originate from a qualifying medical condition that persists beyond the usual course of that qualifying medical condition.
So, in other words, a patient with chronic pain seeking medical marijuana must also have one of the other qualifying conditions stated below:
To restate the qualifying medical conditions for medical marijuana (cannabis) in the State of Florida:

1. Cancer
2. Epilepsy
3. Glaucoma
4. Positive status for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
5. Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
6. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

7. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
8. Crohn’s Disease
9. Parkinson’s Disease
10. Multiple Sclerosis
11. Medical conditions of the same kind or class or comparable to those conditions listed above. This is a decision to be made by the qualifying physician.
12. A terminal condition diagnosed by a physician other than the qualified physician issuing the physician certification for medical marijuana use.

All cancers with the exception of the less malignant skin cancers such as basal and squamous cell can qualify a patient for medical cannabis. However, the patient preferably should be actively under treatment by an oncologist, in remission for less than 12 months, or experiencing complications or side effects from the chemo or conventional treatment.

Pt must provide documentation to our clinic from another medical doctor confirming this diagnosis/prognosis before they can be scheduled.

Positive HIV status
Crohn’s Disease/Ulcerative Colitis

These are inflammatory bowel diseases
PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Multiple Sclerosis or other “demyelinating conditions” of the central and peripheral nervous system

Conditions of the same “Kind” or “class” or comparable to the ones listed above.

This is a judgment call to be made only by Dr. Mueller. If you believe your condition is similar to one of the “qualified” conditions listed by the state of Florida, then please consult with Whole Family Healthcare, provide medical record documentation of the condition, and Dr. Mueller will review the records and history and make a determination as to eligibility for the medical cannabis program.

All patients seeking to be qualified for medical cannabis through Whole Family Healthcare will need to provide various documents substantiating their condition PRIOR TO being allowed to schedule a visit. These documents must be forwarded to Whole Family for review.

  • Copies of medical records that contain information from other physicians, hospitals, chiropractors, or acupuncturists that confirm the qualifying medical condition in question. We only require information from one source, and this could simply be the last office note from another doctor.
  • The patient must be a legal resident of Florida, and provide an official ID (driver’s license, state ID, etc.)
  • Whole Family requires that a demographic form be completed and on file before the actual visit. The information required is simply name, DOB, Social Security number, address and phone number.
  • Our online history form must be completed. In lieu of this you can download or we can email you a printable version of our history form which must be returned at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled office visit.

The process of “qualifying” a patient in the state of Florida

The physician does not “prescribe” but instead, qualifies a patient by following statutory guidelines created by the state of Florida. This is all done online. The State of Florida then approves the patient and enters them into an online Cannabis registration database which is accessible to the State, cannabis-certified physicians and specially licensed Cannabis dispensing pharmacies. The physician will then enter appropriate Cannabis (THC) formulations, dosing, THC quantity, and other pertinent information based on patient needs and product availability through licensed Cannabis Dispensing Pharmacies.

Various Formulations of Medical Cannabis (THC and THC + CBD oil)

Multiple formulations of THC and THC + CBD oil are available through the cannabis dispensing pharmacies. During your visit with Dr. Mueller, the most appropriate form and dose of THC or THC/CBD will be addressed.

The following are the basic formulations available.

  • Oral syringe (Oil)
  • Tinctures
  • Capsules
  • Vape pen cartridges (contain oil)
  • Herb cup vaporizer
  • Nasal rescue spray
  • Topical cream
  • Mystica vaporizer

What to Expect During Your Visit:

  • Standard history and physical exam by Dr. Mueller
